Al-Masry was founded in 1920 after the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 to assert the national identity of the people of Port Said against the clubs of the foreign communities in the city.
The team began its Golden Era in 1932 until 1948 and won a number of titles and succeeded during this period to win the Sultan Hussein Cup in 1933 and 1934 and 1937 and reached the final match and lost in 1930[1] meanwhile it won the Canal Zone League for 17 consecutive times, although the greatest achievement for the team remains the winning of the Egypt Cup in 1998 after beating Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab in the final (4-3).[2]
Al-Masry are arguably the only Egyptian club to turn professional in the 1983-1984 season and were from the first clubs to buy foreign players, the players brought were Iranians and were Port Qasim and Abd al-Rida Brzkri who led the team that season to reach the Cup final in Egypt before losing the match to Al-Ahly Cairo (1-3).
Al-Masry is one of the clubs which participated in the Egyptian Premier League since its launch in 1948, although Al-Masry is the team which is the most participated in the Egyptian Premier League after both Al-Ahly and Zamalek SC as it missed only two seasons during the fifties due to the repercussions of the Suez Crisis on Port Said, Al-Masry did not win the Egyptian league before, but it came the third for many times.
Al-Masry's Crest is composed of a green eagle that holds a green ball over its head in between its two flying wings, the crest was inspired by the shape of Tutankhamun's pendants referring to challenge and strength, so Al-Masry is nicknamed the green eagles. The club's main colours, green and white come from Egypt's flag after the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 as a symbol of patriotism.[3]
Al-Masry formerly played their home games at its former own ground, but its capacity was too small for the club's support. As a consequence, Al-Masry built its own new stadium which is named Port Said Stadium in 1953 and was officially inaugurated in 1955.[4]
